Who We Are

Lumeria Inc.

  • Fred Davis, Founder, President/CEO

Fred has been hailed as a visionary by a number of publications, and has over 30 years of pioneering computer experience. The son of an IBM fellow, Fred started programming in 1966 at the age of 11, as one of the early users of the BASIC computer language. During the 1970's Fred became involved in the microcomputer revolution as an early adopter of the Apple II and CP/M. In the 80's Fred started a long career at Ziff-Davis where he served as editor of A+, MacUser, PC Magazine, and PC Week, and was a key player at ZD's various product-testing labs, several of which he founded. During the 90's Fred was involved in the earliest startup phases of Wired, CNET, and Ask Jeeves. Fred has also authored thirteen computer books, including The Complete IBM Personal Computer -- the first hardware expansion guide to the IBM PC published in the early 1980's. His 1985 book, Desktop Publishing, helped popularize the term and received an award from the Computer Press Association. The New York Times hailed Fred's Windows 3.1 Bible as "the best" book on the topic. Fred also authored the Windows 95 Bible and Windows 98 Bible, and developed the Windows Bible CD-ROM. Fred has been widely quoted in publications such as Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, and the Atlantic Monthly. Fred has also appeared on many radio and television programs, including NPR's "All Things Considered," "CBS Evening News," and "ABC News."

  • Joanna Liang, Chief Engineer

-- Main architect and developer of Lumeria's SuperProxy system

Joanna brings her rigid academic training in computer-based natural language processing, modern information retrieval, and knowledge management to her position as Chief Engineer at Lumeria. In 1994, she received her Masters degree in English Linguistics from Peking University. In 1999, she obtained her Masters degree in Information Management and Systems from UC Berkeley's School of Information Management and Systems. While in school, she developed MetaKM -- a meta-search engine for the knowledge management domain, and she was the key player in the Berkeley Ad Blocker project. Joanna joined Lumeria in July of 1999 and has been instrumental in the architecture and development of Lumeria's technology platform. She has also made unique contributions to the efficient storage, interchange, processing and generation of XML documents. She was the lead engineer of the DTDFactory project, responsible for the development of its whole back-end as well as parts of its Web-based GUI, and she has also been centrally involved in the Lumeria Ad Network project.
